Nitt Witt Ridge

nitt witt ridge

is  one of the most unusual houses that you will ever see.

Art Beal ( aka or Captain Nitt Witt) purchased the land in 1928, and devoted 50 years carving out the terraces using a pick and shovel, and creating his own castle on a hill, in response to the majestic Hearst Castle nearby.

Beal was garbage collector in Cambria during the 1940s-1950s, using what Cambrians discarded as trash and natural materials  Some of the building materials were discards from Hearst Castle where he was employed for awhile.

Some of the rather eclectic building materials include  beer cans, shells, toilets and tire rims

The house has many knickknacks and oddities that can be seen by the visitor. There is a sign outside of Nitt Witt Ridge posted by the new owners, who have repaired and cleaned up the house and gardens. Guided tours of the property are available. Tours are available by reservation only and include a four-minute video. For information call the O'Malleys at 805-927-2690.

Nitt Witt Ridge is California Historical Landmark
